Easy Mummy Brownies

These easy Mummy Brownies turn your favorite brownies—homemade or straight from a box, because swanky we are not—into an adorable Halloween treat with a little melted white chocolate and candy eyeballs. They're ridiculously simple, delightfully silly, and proof that sometimes sticking googly eyes on dessert really is enough. Yield: 12–16 brownies, depending on size Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: Varies depending on brownie recipe Cooling Time: About 1 hour Category: Dessert Method: Baking Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 baked and completely cooled pan of brownies homemade or from a boxed mix
  • 1/2 cup 85 g white chocolate chips or white candy melts
  • 24 –32 candy eyeballs

Method

  1. Bake the brownies. Prepare and bake your favorite brownies according to the recipe or package directions. Allow them to cool completely before decorating. I know. Rude. But melted chocolate on warm brownies is chaos, and not the cute Halloween kind.
  2. Cut the brownies. Remove the cooled brownies from the pan and cut them into 12–16 squares or rectangles—or whatever size your conscience allows.
  3. Melt the white chocolate. Place the white chocolate chips or candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 15–20 second intervals, stirring well after each, until smooth and completely melted.
  4. Make the mummy wraps. Using a spoon or piping bag, drizzle the melted white chocolate back and forth over each brownie in irregular zigzag lines to create the mummy's bandages. Don't aim for perfection. Mummies have been dead for several thousand years. Their wrapping can be a little wonky.
  5. Add the eyes. While the white chocolate is still soft, gently press two candy eyeballs onto each brownie.
  6. Allow the chocolate to set before serving.
  7. Stand back and admire the fact that approximately five minutes of effort turned regular brownies into ridiculously cute little mummies. Cackling with delight is optional but encouraged.

Notes

Use whatever brownies you love: Homemade brownies? Wonderful. Boxed brownies? Also wonderful. This is supposed to be a fun Halloween treat, not a test of your commitment to scratch baking.
White chocolate vs. candy melts: Either works, but candy melts are usually a little easier to melt and drizzle. White chocolate chips may be thicker once melted.
If your white chocolate is too thick: If you're using white chocolate rather than candy melts and it's too thick to drizzle easily, stir in a very small amount of neutral oil or coconut oil until you reach a drizzling consistency.
Easy drizzling: Spoon the melted chocolate into a small piping bag or zip-top bag and snip off a tiny corner. Then zigzag away. A spoon works too—and makes particularly charming disheveled mummies.
Let the brownies cool completely: Warm brownies can melt your mummy bandages and make decorating unnecessarily messy. Delicious mess, certainly, but we're trying to give these little guys faces.
Storage: Store the decorated brownies in an airtight container at room temperature according to the storage recommendations for the brownie recipe you used.
