Old School Pampered Chef Apple Crisp (AKA: Mom’s Apple Crisp)

Sometimes the best recipes aren’t new. They’re the ones that bring us right back to where we started.

My friends, isn’t it funny how food can take you straight back into a memory?

One bite of something familiar and suddenly you’re standing in a kitchen you haven’t seen in years, remembering people you haven’t thought about in ages, and wondering how on earth so much time has passed.

That’s exactly what today’s recipe is about. Pure nostalgia in a bowl. And, as it turns out, a little thrift store treasure.

And today’s little trip down memory lane comes with a bonus: we’re making microwave apple crisp, just like we did at those old Pampered Chef parties. No oven required, just a handful of pantry ingredients and a whole lot of nostalgia.

A Thrift Store Find and a Trip Down Memory Lane

Ivy and I love going thrifting. There’s something about wandering through the aisles, looking at all the things that someone else decided they didn’t need anymore, and occasionally finding a little piece of treasure.

You never quite know what you’re going to come home with.

On a recent trip, I spotted something that immediately took me back about a million years.

Okay, maybe not a million. But close.

It was a classic round Pampered Chef stoneware pan. The very same kind I’d owned (and unfortunately broken) way back in the day.

And when I say way back, I mean before Ivy was even a twinkle in her daddy’s eye.

Back when I was young, skinny, and planning a wedding.

Ahhh, youth.

You see, before I got married, my coworkers threw me a bridal Pampered Chef party.

Now, at the time, I didn’t realize that someone was making money off all of us buying kitchen gadgets. I just thought it was a fun excuse to get together, eat something delicious, and collect a few things for my future kitchen.

And honestly? It was a lot of fun.

There were gadgets. There were recipes. There were probably more specialized kitchen tools than any one person actually needed.

But there was also an apple crisp.

An apple crisp made in the MICROWAVE.

Friends, I was amazed.

I mean, here was this warm, cinnamon-scented apple dessert, with a buttery graham cracker and oat topping, made without ever turning on the oven.

And it was SO good.

Good enough that I ended up with that stoneware pan and a recipe that would stick around long after the wedding gifts were put away.

Bringing Back an Old Favorite

These days, I don’t feel the need to use every kitchen gadget and mixing bowl I own to make one dessert.

I’ve learned a thing or two in the kitchen over the years. Mostly that sometimes simpler really is better. And that whoever makes the mess should probably help clean it up.

But finding that old stoneware pan at the thrift store felt like a little invitation.

An invitation to pull out an O.G. recipe that was practically begging for a comeback.

And you know what? It was just as good as I remembered.

Tart Granny Smith apples soften underneath a sweet, buttery topping made with graham crackers, brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon. The whole thing smells like fall and tastes like something your mom would make on a Sunday afternoon.

Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated.

Just warm apples, cinnamon, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream slowly melting into all those delicious little nooks and crannies.

Sometimes that’s all you need.

Wait. We’re Really Making Apple Crisp in the Microwave?

Yup. We sure are.

Could you make this in the oven? Absolutely.

But that wouldn’t be quite the same, would it?

Part of the charm of this particular recipe is that it comes together in about 15 minutes in the microwave. No preheating. No waiting around for the oven to do its thing.

And while the topping won’t get quite as crunchy as a traditional oven-baked crisp, the graham crackers and oats give it a lovely texture that makes this recipe its own special little thing.

One important note: You’ll want to use a microwave-safe baking dish. If you happen to have one of those old Pampered Chef stoneware pans like I do, make sure yours is specifically approved for microwave use.

You certainly don’t need to go hunting for vintage stoneware to make this recipe.

Although I wouldn’t discourage a little thrift store adventure.

A Few Little Things About Mom’s Apple Crisp

Granny Smith apples are my favorite here. They’re tart enough to balance the sweetness of the brown sugar topping, and they hold their shape nicely while cooking.

The graham crackers are part of the magic. This isn’t your typical flour-and-oats-only crisp topping. Those little pieces of graham cracker give it a wonderfully nostalgic flavor.

Old-fashioned or quick oats both work. Use whichever you have in the pantry. I’m certainly not sending you to the grocery store for a different kind of oatmeal.

Let it rest before serving. Those apples are going to be piping hot when they come out of the microwave. Give everything a few minutes to settle before digging in.

Vanilla ice cream is highly encouraged. Whipped cream is lovely, too, but there’s something about cold vanilla ice cream melting over warm cinnamon apples that makes me ridiculously happy.

Some Recipes Are Worth Keeping Around

I think that’s what I love most about this apple crisp.

It’s not a fancy dessert. It’s not something that’s going to win a pastry competition. And it certainly doesn’t require an afternoon of baking.

It’s just a really good recipe with a really good memory attached to it.

A memory of coworkers celebrating a bride-to-be. A kitchen gadget I was so excited to own. A time when I was just beginning to figure out what making a home would look like.

And now, all these years later, I get to make it again in a thrifted stoneware pan, with a whole lot more life and love behind me.

Maybe that’s the real magic of old recipes.

They grow up with us.

So grab someone you love and go thrifting. Find a little treasure, come home, and make something warm and delicious.

And if you happen to stumble across an old Pampered Chef stoneware pan?

Well, you know what to do.

Happy baking, my friends. Or, in this case, happy microwaving! ❤️

Old School Pampered Chef Apple Crisp (Mom’s Apple Crisp)

A cozy, old-fashioned microwave apple crisp made with tart Granny Smith apples and a buttery graham cracker, oat, and cinnamon topping. A nostalgic dessert that’s ready in minutes.

Course: Dessert

Cuisine: American

Servings: 6–8

Prep: 10 minutes

Cook: 12–15 minutes

Method: Microwave

Ingredients

4–6 large Granny Smith apples

8 graham cracker sheets, chopped

¾ cup packed brown sugar

½ cup quick or old-fashioned oats

½ cup all-purpose flour

1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

⅓ cup butter, melted

Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional but seriously…do it)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples. Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples. Arrange them in a small, microwave-safe baking dish (maybe one you found while thrifting?).
  2. Make the topping. In a medium bowl, combine the chopped graham crackers, brown sugar, oats, flour, and cinnamon.
  3. Add the butter. Pour the melted butter over the dry ingredients and stir until everything is evenly coated and crumbly. Resist the urge to snack on the topping.
  4. Assemble. Spoon the graham cracker mixture evenly over the sliced apples.
  5. Microwave. Cook uncovered on HIGH for 12–15 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Microwave cooking times may vary depending on your microwave, dish, and how many apples you’ve got in there.
  6. Cool and serve. I know it’s hard, but let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. Top with whipped cream or a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream…you know you want to.

Recipe Notes

  • Apples: Granny Smith apples give the best balance of tartness and sweetness, but other firm baking apples can work.
  • Microwave-safe dish: Check that your dish is rated for microwave cooking. Not all vintage stoneware is.
  • Texture: This is a microwave apple crisp, so the topping will be softer than a traditional oven-baked crisp.
  • Leftovers: Refrigerate covered leftovers promptly and enjoy within 3–4 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave.
